Expanded Eligibility for the Canada Emergency Business Account
The Prime Minister announced today that the Canada Emergency Business account will be available to sole owner-operators of a business as well as to businesses that rely on contractors, and businesses where employees are paid though dividends.
The Canada Emergency Business Account provides interest-free loans of up to $40,000, with up to $10,00 loan forgiveness, to small businesses and not-for-profits, to help cover their operating costs during a period where their revenues have been temporarily reduced, due to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 virus.
Extension of Ontario Emergency Order
The Ontario government, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, has extended all emergency orders currently in force until May 29, 2020. That includes the closure of bars and restaurants except for takeout and delivery only, restrictions on social gatherings of more than five people, and staff redeployment rules for long-term care homes and congregate settings like retirement homes and women's shelters.
Updates on Schools, Daycares and Summer Camps
Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced Tuesday that the province is cancelling the school year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Premier stated that online learning will continue and students will receive their report cards.
Education Minster Stephen Lecce said a full plan for reopening the province's schools in September will be released by the end of June.
The Premier has announced the opening of summer day camps in July and child care centres as part of stage two of reopening Ontario, subject to the continuing progress in trends of key public health indicators.
