New Support for Students

The Prime Minister announced the Canada Emergency Student Benefit to provide immediate help to students who wouldn’t be eligible for other financial support programs.
Students will be eligible for $1,250 a month from May through August. That sum can go up to $1,750 if the student is taking care of someone or has a disability.
The benefit is available also to students who have jobs but are making less than $1,000 a month.

Trudeau also said students who volunteer for the fight against COVID-19 over the summer will be paid between $1,000 and $5,000, depending on the hours they work.
The prime minister also announced the federal government is doubling student grants for eligible students — up to $6,000 for full-time students and up to $3,600 for part-time students.

College and university students currently in school, planning to start in September, or who graduated in December 2019 or later are eligible.

Applications for the Canada Emergency Student Benefit will be available through the Canada Revenue Agency, however the benefit will require additional legislation and talks are now underway about how quickly a bill to implement this new program can be brought forward.
