Martha's Story

Martha originally began massage therapy treatment nearly 20 years ago for tension in her lower back. However, she found the most significant benefit from massage therapy after starting treatment for stage-three breast cancer in 2010 was learning that lymphatic massage could help prevent lymphedema which is tissue swelling caused by an accumulation of protein-rich fluid that's usually drained through the body's lymphatic system.

She has gone through a mastectomy, the removal of over 20 lymph nodes, chemotherapy and radiation, and she is confident that her regular lymphatic massage prevents her from developing lymphedema. She also experiences significant immediate benefit.

“After a lymphatic massage I feel I have greater movement of my arm and the pocket in my armpit is less swollen,” Martha said. “I believe it helps me maintain good movement and use of my arm.”

Martha still regularly receives lymphatic massage every 4-6 weeks, sometimes with massage therapy targeting other areas added as well, which she finds is essential in maintaining her quality of life. She continues with her treatment because she finds that it helps her feel well, helps keep her moving and is something she can do to play an active role in her own health. She would suggest that anyone with lymphedema consider this treatment.

“For someone considering this treatment I would tell them that someone trained in lymphatic massage can help you understand what’s happening,” Martha said. “My massage therapist is trained and does a great job of helping to understand what is happening.”

My RMT is very respectful of my body which I have appreciated because of needing to work through my body image because of my mastectomy. Between sessions, Martha’s RMT also recommends exercises, which Martha finds to be very helpful to maintain her regular movement. She also appreciates the understanding her RMT shows about her relationship with her body.

“My RMT is very respectful of my body which I have appreciated because of needing to work through my body image because of my mastectomy,” Martha said.

Massage therapy is an important part of Martha’s overall health plan. Immediately after a massage therapy treatment, Martha feels more comfortable and has improved movement right away. This feeling lasts for four weeks or so after a treatment for her, and she plans to continue with massage therapy for as long as possible.

“I will continue to access massage therapy because I believe it is a preventative tool for me,” Martha said. “It personally gives me confidence that I am doing the best I can to maintain good health along with my regular exercise and diet plan.”

Martha feels grateful for the ongoing support and care that she gets from her massage therapist. She also appreciates that her massage therapist stays up-to-date with the latest information and evidence to ensure she gives the best possible treatment. One of the important things she’s learned is the importance of lymphatic massage in her overall health plan.

“I have come to understand the importance of finding someone I can trust and respects me and that I feel becomes an advocate for my ongoing good health,” Martha said.
