TORONTO, ON. October 22 – 28, 2017 is Massage Therapy Awareness Week, and to celebrate this occasion, the Registered Massage Therapists’ Association of Ontario is letting the public know how massage therapy can fit into their everyday healthcare.
Massage therapy is a clinically-oriented health care option that can provide relief from the musculoskeletal pain and discomfort that can come from every day activities, such as sitting too much, pushing too hard at your favourite sport, or carrying around a heavy bag. Massage therapy is a regulated health profession in Ontario and massage therapy should only be performed by a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT). All Ontarians can visit an RMT of their choice, without prescription or referral.
Massage therapy has proven to be beneficial for people with a wide variety of common conditions, and massage therapists are an important part of your healthcare team. Research shows that massage therapy is a great option for decreasing the physical symptoms of stress and anxiety, as well as for decreasing musculoskeletal pain, augmenting physical function and improving overall health.
Your RMT will assess your individual needs, and develop a treatment plan with you to make sure you receive the most appropriate treatment. The treatment plan can be reassessed and changed at any time. Ask your RMT how they can help you!
“Massage therapy is a valuable evidence-based health care option, and massage therapists successfully treat individuals with a wide range of conditions,” said Andrew Lewarne, Executive Director and CEO of the RMTAO. “RMTs offer patient-centred care, keeping their patients’ goals and needs in mind to design a treatment plan. Massage therapy can help get people back to their regular activities without pain, and massage therapists play an important role in healthcare.”
This Massage Therapy Awareness Week we will be posting to our social media channels about the role of massage therapy in your everyday healthcare, and inviting people to #AskyourRMT how they can help. Check us out on Facebook and Twitter @RMTAO, and share our posts with your network to get the word out about what massage therapy can do and the role massage therapists play in healthcare.
