The RMTAO attended the 10th Annual Advanced Palliative Medicine Update in May 2014. We gathered five high quality studies that demonstrated the validity of including massage therapy in the palliative team whether it be in the hospital or hospice setting.

The greatest challenge lay in the creation of funding models for treatments such as massage therapy. In many cases patients were unaware that they had coverage or that their partner had coverage that they could access. As a result of the time we took to discuss various relevant studies, a number of doctors responded by including massage therapy in their list of participating health care providers.

We were able to have discussions around the reality of massage therapy being used through Blue Cross as a provision for our veterans. Participants were very pleased that there were various outreach opportunities happening throughout Ontario, including places like Princess Margaret Hospital for example.
