Presented by Mike Reoch
Many RMTs learn to treat tender, referring spots in muscle as trigger
points. That model has been questioned in the research for years. This
session looks at another explanation: small nerves in the skin and the
tunnels they pass through. You'll see the anatomy of those tunnels, why a
nerve there can become sensitive, and how to tell it apart from other
sources of pain. Then you'll see a gentle hands-on approach to give the
nerve more room. The session presents the nerve model as a working
hypothesis, not a settled fact, and covers the arguments on both sides of
the trigger point debate.
Learning Outcomes:
Participants will be able to…
- Describe how skin ligaments form tunnels for small nerves in the skin.
- Explain why a nerve in one of these tunnels can become sensitive, and how an inflamed nerve behaves differently.
- Use nerve paths and simple tension and compression tests to judge whether a nerve may be involved.
- Apply gentle skin-handling methods that aim to reduce pressure on a sensitive nerve.
CMTO Competencies:
- Use an evidence-informed approach in your work
- Practice in a manner consistent with current developments in the profession
- Practice in a self-reflective manner
- Work within areas of personal knowledge and skillsPractice in a manner consistent with current developments in the profession: This class will bring attendees up to date on
