This session explores the multifactorial nature of Muscle Tension Dysphonia (MTD) through a real-world clinical lens, examining how voice dysfunction may intersect with jaw tension, cervical dysfunction, anterior neck musculature, tongue tension, breathing mechanics, postural compensation and nervous system sensitization. Using real patient cases, participants will follow the clinical reasoning process behind assessment, treatment adaptation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and progression of care. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing when voice symptoms may extend beyond the larynx itself, while remaining within appropriate massage therapy scope and referral pathways.

• Understand the anatomical and functional relationships between the jaw, cervical spine, respiratory system, and voice production
• Identify common musculoskeletal contributors associated with Muscle Tension Dysphonia presentations
• Explore assessment findings that may indicate overlapping TMJ, cervical, postural, or tongue dysfunction
• Examine treatment adaptation and pacing strategies in complex or chronic presentations
• Recognize indications for interdisciplinary collaboration and referral within voice-related care
• Develop greater confidence in clinical reasoning surrounding complex head, neck, jaw, and voice presentations

About the Presenter

Jules Poulin

A Registered Massage Therapist since 2000, Jules Poulin has spent the last 15 years focusing her career on TMD/TMJD, neck, voice & swallowing rehabilitation. 

In 2018, she opened From the Neck Up: North America’s first and only massage clinic dedicated to the rehabilitation of the jaw, head, neck, voice, tongue and ears. In 2023 she launched her continued education series through her From the Neck Up Academy which now includes several courses taught by her, as well as up and coming RMTs with a focus on niche rehabilitation and patient-centric perspectives. She now dedicates her time to managing her various businesses which include the From the Neck Up clinic, the From the Neck Up Academy, public speaking (webinars), business coaching, and product development.
