The term Biopsychosocial is used prolifically within MSK healthcare as a model and approach to health and to pain. Paradoxically it remains ill defined, and the uptake of the approach is limited both in quantity and quality, often based on limited understanding. This webinar introduces and provides resources for the complex constructs that the term BPS is supposed to encompass. The proposition is that the term BPS, which has become a meaningless heuristic, be replaced with language that provides more concrete understanding of the skills and practice required of a healthcare practitioner for patient-centred care. These constructs include the Social Determinants of Health (SDH), Health Inequities (HI), Cultural Competence (CC), and Cultural Humility (CH). The use of SDH/HI underpins documents like Ontario Health’s Equity Inclusion Diversity and Anti-Racism Framework. Public Health documents including 2025 guidelines developed specifically for people-centred care to guide the education and practice of health and social service providers will be introduced.

Learning Outcomes
  • Acknowledge limitations of the terminology and use of BPS as an approach to patient-centred care.
  • Understand the complexity, skills, intersectionality, and practice requirements of SDH/HI, CC, and CH.
