Treating mastectomy patients within the biopsychosocial spiritual model of care enhances the rehabilitation experience for both patients and massage therapists alike. It creates fruitful conditions for whole person healing using human-centric care principles, empowering patients to heal within optimal conditions, and providing sustainable working conditions for therapists.
Understanding the complexity of the population who receives this type of surgery comprises advanced clinical knowledge, that when combined with therapeutic clinical skills can greatly enhance the rehabilitative process for people undergoing breast and chest surgery. The main people seeking out this type of care are those going through surgery related to breast cancer and gender affirmatio. Both populations require therapists with knowledge beyond entry-to practice skills to fully, safely and ethically treat them.Being able to learn and apply advanced knowledge to complex care patients flourishes effectively when guided by a mentor, as this can boost clinical competency, critical thinking skills, creative problem solving and relationship-building, as well as fostering equity, diversity and inclusion in healthcare settings.
Learning Outcomes
- Learn what the biopsychosocial spiritual model of care is, and how it supports mindful rehabilitation.
- Gain clarity on 3 types of mastectomy surgery with very different healing outcomes, and how massage therapy can help support this process.
- Understand 3 key stages to offer rehabilitative care to patients during their mastectomy surgery experience, with actionable strategies that support each stage.
- Learn the science behind mentorship and how it applies to learning complex care using evidence-informed principles.
Eryn Price has been in the healing arts for 25 years, the last 14 as a massage therapist in BC. She started working with mastectomy patients just a few years into her practice and has made it a preferred area of practice since. She mentors other massage therapists through her Mastectomy Guide programs, which are helping to fill the gap in post-surgical rehabilitation services for breast and chest surgery patients. She teaches world wide, and speaks at conferences and events to help raise awareness of the benefits of massage therapy in treating complex care for sensitive populations.
