In healthcare, patient self-efficacy, defined by Albert Bandura as people’s beliefs about their capabilities to produce designated levels of performance that influence events in their lives plays a crucial role for patients; willingness to adhere to treatment plans, make informed health decisions, achieve desired outcomes, and perceive the skill of the clinician and the quality of care they receive. Self-efficacy beliefs significantly shape how individuals feel, think, motivate themselves, and behave. This presentation will explore how fostering self-efficacy can enhance patient adherence, improve clinical results, and boost satisfaction, particularly in complex cases.
The participants will be guided through practical strategies to promote patient self-efficacy in their clinical practice. Attendees will learn to reflect on their current methods, apply the lasts research, and tailor their communication to empower patients to take an active role in their care. Participants will also leave equipped with strategies to advocate for a self-efficacy focused approach when collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, helping to improve treatment adherence and patient satisfaction in their practice.
Learning Outcomes
1. Practice in a Self-Reflective Manner
Participants will be able to engage in reflective practice to assess the impact of self-efficacy focused interventions on patient adherence,
satisfaction, and treatment outcomes.
2. Interact Effectively with Other Professionals
By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to clearly articulate the role of Registered Massage Therapists in fostering patient self-efficacy within interdisciplinary care teams, and lead discussions with other healthcare professionals on how supporting self-efficacy improves patient outcomes and satisfaction.
3. Use an Evidence-Informed Approach in Your Work
Participants will be able to design treatment plans that integrate research evidence, clinical experience, and patient preferences to enhance
patient self-efficacy and long-term outcomes.
4. Communicate Effectively
Participants will be able to recognize and address both verbal and non-verbal patient cues that may signal barriers to self-efficacy, adjusting their
communication to foster greater patient confidence.
About the Presenter
Tanya Alton (RMT) career as a Massage Therapist has spanned over 10 years, including tenure as a Clinic Supervisor and Primary Instructor at WCCMT Victoria for seven years. During that time, she has taught both Regional Orthopedic Assessment and Spinal Orthopedic Assessment courses, as well as a course called Pain and Stress, which focused on the neurophysiology of pain through a biopsychosocial approach. Tanya also marked students' final case study research presentations, fostering their development of critical thinking and research skills. These experiences helped her build a strong foundation in both clinical practice and healthcare education, facilitating my role in cultivating a new generation of practitioners skilled in evidence-informed care.
Currently, Tanya works at AMP, a healthcare education company, as an instructor, course developer, and marketing strategist, where she creates courses for a diverse range of healthcare professionals. Tanya designs educational content that aims to enhance skills and knowledge, ultimately improving patient outcomes. In this presentation, she will share evidence-based insights on how fostering patient self-efficacy can enhance clinical outcomes, such as patient adherence and satisfaction, particularly in the management of complex care cases.
